bringing vision to life: strategic communication in education
November 11, 2025

When a school system launches something as transformative as student defenses, there’s one big question that always comes next: how do you help everyone else understand why it matters?

That’s the question Butler County Schools asked (and answered) through a storytelling partnership with us. The result: a short video that captured student growth but also helped the entire community see their strategic plan come alive on screen.

what does “strategic communication in education” really look like?

It’s not just a fancy phrase for newsletters and press releases. Strategic communication is about helping people feel the vision, not just read about it. For Butler County, that vision was clear:

one team. one vision. we are butler strong.

But their Defenses of Learning  (student-led exhibitions where learners demonstrate their skills, growth, and confidence) were still new to many. The community needed to understand what these defenses were and why they mattered.

So instead of another report or presentation, the district decided to tell the story visually through the voices of students, teachers, and leaders who live it every day.

“This project helped our community understand not just what we’re doing, but why,” Superintendent Robert Tuck shared. “It gave people a window into our students’ growth and into the heart of Butler County’s mission.”

how storytelling built shared understanding

When we first met with Superintendent Tuck and his leadership team, we could feel the clarity of their mission (and the weight of wanting their community to get it. ) Their 2023–2027 Strategic Plan centered on helping students grow as communicators, problem solvers, and collaborators. But translating that from a document to a shared experience required something more human.

That’s where storytelling comes in.

We worked alongside Butler County leaders to mine exemplars of the “Defenses of Learning” after they unfolded (from elementary classrooms to high school auditoriums). Each scene revealed a glimpse of their Portrait of a Learner in action: students speaking with confidence, solving problems creatively, and reflecting on who they’re becoming.

The goal wasn’t to polish the story. It was to make it real.

what made the project successful? three simple choices

1. leading with listening

Before we ever picked up a camera, we spent time understanding Butler County’s heartbeat: their goals, values, and community context. Strategic communication always starts with listening and thanks to the vision of Butler County Schools, our team has been alongside them from the very launch of their plan.

2. elevating authentic voices

Students told their own stories. Teachers and principals spoke from experience. Every quote, every smile, every clip was rooted in real learning rather than scripted perfection.

3. aligning visuals to strategy

In post-production, we connected each moment to the district’s strategic plan. The final edit became a visual translation of the district’s values.

why it mattered beyond the screen

When the video premiered at the Butler County Chamber Luncheon, it sparked something powerful.

The video bridged the gap between strategic planning and community understanding by showing that communication isn’t just about sharing information, it’s about building connection.

Now, the video continues to serve as a living resource for the district. It plays at community events, board meetings, and will be integrated into professional learning and new staff orientations as a reminder that when students lead, and when communication is done with purpose, everyone wins.
