branding a new chapter for cumberland county’s elementary school
September 28, 2025

When a community builds a new school, the story is bigger than brick and mortar. It’s about identity, pride, and belonging.

Cumberland County’s new elementary school has been years in the making, and when it came time to give the building a face (or in this case, a paw), they turned to us.

why a mascot matters for a new school

A new school building can feel like a fresh start, but it can also stir nostalgia for the spaces people are leaving behind. The old elementary school had been part of Cumberland County for generations. To make the transition feel exciting instead of bittersweet, the district wanted a visual symbol that kids could instantly connect with.

A mascot is more than a drawing. It’s a friend, a rallying point, and a way for students to see themselves in their school.

how we got to the “baby” panther

Cumberland County already had a panther mascot, but it didn’t quite fit the tone for young students. The architects’ early drafts didn’t land with the district, so our team was invited in. We kept the panther identity but reimagined it for the elementary level: softer lines, brighter expression, a little less intimidating and a lot more kid-friendly.

The result? A “baby panther” that looks ready to high-five kindergartners and cheer on fifth graders alike.

building consistency across the district

Since AC had already partnered with Cumberland County on their district-wide foundation and rebrand, the new mascot wasn’t a one-off. It was an extension of the brand story we had helped them craft. The baby panther connects to the broader panther identity while giving elementary students a mascot they can truly call their own.

This kind of alignment matters. When schools across a district share a cohesive brand, families and staff feel the unity. When each school also has space for unique expression, kids feel ownership. That balance is exactly what we want to see in healthy district branding.

what this means for cumberland county

The new elementary school is more than a building project. It’s a visible investment in the future of a small but mighty community. By giving the youngest students a mascot to love, the district planted a seed of pride that will grow with them all the way through graduation.
