preschool on wheels: how franklin county is making early learning visible
September 15, 2025

When families think about preschool, their first thought usually isn’t a bus. But in Franklin County, a brightly wrapped bus is changing that and making early education more visible (and more accessible) in the process.

With the support of a grant, Franklin County’s preschool director brought a big idea to life: a preschool bus that travels around town offering screenings, sharing resources, and sparking excitement for early learning. Inside, little ones can flip through books or explore play equipment. Outside, the wrap tells the story of preschool in a way that’s bold, colorful, and inviting.

removing barriers for families

Getting ready for preschool can feel overwhelming for families, especially when screenings or resources require trips across town. Franklin County tackled that challenge head-on by putting preschool on wheels. Instead of asking families to come to them, the district chose to go to neighborhoods, parks, and community spaces.

That simple shift matters. It tells families: we see you, we want to meet you where you are, and we want the preschool process to be easy and welcoming.

when design becomes communication

For many children, this bus is their very first introduction to school. That makes design more than decoration: it’s a first impression. Every element, from the playful graphics on the outside to the welcoming panels inside, was created to help children feel curious and safe while showing families that Franklin County Schools is ready to support them.

Bright colors, friendly characters, and clear messaging don’t just look good, they build trust. The bus communicates that preschool isn’t intimidating, it’s joyful. It signals to families that this is a district that values early learning and is investing in the youngest members of the community.

a moving classroom + billboard

The preschool bus is more than a vehicle. It’s a mobile classroom, a rolling billboard, and a reminder that schools don’t just wait for families to come through their doors. They go out into the community, building trust one stop at a time.

It’s also a symbol of innovation. While not every district has a preschool bus, every district does have opportunities to think creatively about how they connect with families. Franklin County’s approach shows that sometimes the most powerful communication strategy isn’t a press release or a flyer, it’s something families can see, touch, and experience together.

why this matters for community trust

Preschool is the foundation of a child’s school journey. By making it visible, approachable, and accessible, Franklin County is doing more than enrolling students. They’re building lasting trust with families who will walk alongside the district for years to come.

At AC, we’re grateful we got to design the wrap and create the interior graphics that brought this vision to life. It’s the kind of project that reminds us why design is never just about looks. It’s about story, trust, and community impact.

Because when preschool shows up in the neighborhood, the whole community gets to see what’s possible for its youngest learners.
